Please describe the project specifications.
The project consists of two gymnasiums, one is a comprehensive gymnasium and the other is a natatorium. Façade of both structures are composed of white ETFE cushions. A PTFE membrane structure covers the space between two gymnasiums.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
As one of National City Games competition venues, Qingkou sports center is designed with Motown elements. The main body of the building looks like two huge wheels with a plurality of different sizes of “gear” scattered in the surrounding.

What is unique or complex about the project?
The natatorium is composed of 60 ETFE cushions and the comprehensive gymnasium is composed of 80 ETFE cushions. Each cushion is suppressed by 7 polyethylene ropes to show a stereoscopic effect. The overall shape looks like hundreds of “engine cylinder” listed which embodies the strong power that will give to the audience to super sensory experience. It also shows a unique regional culture of “Southeastern Motown”. The usual rise-span ratio of ETFE cushion is between 1/8-1/10. To achieve architectural effect of stereoscopic, we had to adopt an unusually large rise-span ratio of 1/6 for outer layer of ETFE cushion, which posed a serious challenge for fabrication of cushions.

What were the results of the project?
The owner is very satisfied with our engineering quality, construction progress, after-sale service and other aspects. The architect’s design intention is fully achieved with facades made up of white ETFE cushions. Now this sports center is praised as “Water Cube of Fujian Province” by local people. (“Water Cube” is the nickname of the National Aquatics Center in Beijing.)
