Please describe the project specifications

Holiday Inn has developed a new restaurant, Burger Theory, which is now associated with many of its properties. At the Holiday Inn located near the airport in Phoenix, AZ, the old property was very much in need of a renovation. They opportunity was set to re-purpose and re-brand the hotel while putting in the new Burger Theory restaurant

As part of the project, a new façade was developed which would provide a much needed facelift to an old building while also offering an exterior shade application which also offered increased solar protection and efficiency to the building.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project was to develop a fresh look to the exterior elevations of this old building. The client requested a new wall panel system that undulated in and out along the north face of the building. The system would span the full length and width of the façade (20’ x 70’) and would help to define the entrance and patio area of the new restaurant.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The architect’s vision of the undulating wall panels presented a unique opportunity. The system, and its undulating geometry, was created with two typical panel shapes and were fabricated from a light aluminum frame. The frames were randomly placed in their position on the façade while also being randomly orientated from top to bottom which created a dynamic look to the new façade. A total of seventeen frames were built and each had its own membrane tensioned around the frame.

What were the results of the project?

The fabric façade system created a vibrant new look to the building. And backlighting was added which further increased the architectural impact of the façade. A lively and architecturally intriguing new exterior elevation was achieved. The impact created by the new fabric façade exceeded the client’s expectations.
