Please describe the project specifications

We were contacted by an architect to supply and install a retractable Pergola roof awning type system for the restaurant patio at Tandoor in Tysons Corner, VA. The project consists of three Retractable Pergola Awnings and one fixed shade sail mounted on the restaurant rear elevated patio. Portions of the project was mounted to the wall, and portions of the Pergola Awnings were mounted to a self supporting structure.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project was to provide shade and rain protection on the restaurants patio on inclement days, while also offering an opportunity to retract the system if the weather allows. They also wanted a system that could have roll down zipper screens and heaters added later for use during cooler days to extend the seasonal use of the patio.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The odd shape of the patio made it impossible to cover the entire space with just retractable Pergola awnings. The odd shape of the patio also made it a challenge to cover the entire space while also making sure water is channeled away from the wall. To solve this, a larger Pergola awning was designed and installed on the long wall, and two smaller ones with an A frame sub structure was designed on the adjoining side of the patio. In between the three Pergola awning systems, a fixed shade sail was integrated to fill in the corner to fill the entire space.

What were the results of the project?

The client was able to maximize the coverage of the retractable roof pergola systems, while also protecting the entire patio on rainy days. As a result, the client does not loose revenue and have to close the patio due to rain. The system is also ready for the installation of zipper screens and heaters without further modifications to the system or structure. The net result is that the client now has a system they can extend when the weather is inclement, and retract when weather permits, or the patio is not in use. They can add zipper screens to the system in the fall and extend the use of the patio well into the cooler months.
