What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of this project was to replace the existing membrane structure with a more functional, aesthetic structure, enabling more efficient use of the precinct. The client requested a custom designed structure that seals an area of the shopping precinct from rain while using a combination of fabrics to create a specific pattern in order to increase the natural light in the area. They also requested that it feature with a customised programmable LED lighting system.

What is unique or complex about the project?

In order to overcome the challenges of the project, load rated gantries/hoarding was installed around all the tenancies which enabled them to maintain day to day operations. Seeing that the whole area is a suspended slab and the light rail runs past all entries to the area, steel delivery times and locations were very specific and heavily monitored with regards to traffic control. Due to the load restrictions, installation was carried out using a small crawler crane and boom lifts.

What were the results of the project?

This is a feature roof over a popular shopping centre precinct that used two different translucencies of Hiraoka PVC fabric in order to achieve a stunning pattern effect. The overall size was 1291 square metres and the structure used a custom programmable LED lighting system.
