Please describe the project specifications

10 Aluminum Frames overlaid with SEG printed fabric. 3 of the frames included LEDs with a relay which was tripped by a motion sensor as onlookers pass by. The LEDs shine a light on a piece of printed acrylic mounted hidden behind the poplin fabric. Because the fabric is not 100% opaque, the image printed on the acrylic is projected through the poplin with a message to the viewer.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The discovery portal at Seattle Children's Research Institute is a visitor center where the community can learn about the work underway to develop lifesaving cures, accelerate clinical advances, and address health issues affecting children and families around the world. The objective was to display a simple, yet memorable, message using graphic images of children to reinforce the importance of the work being done.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Defining and testing the ink settings so that the image would be hidden with the lights off and then clearly displayed when the lights are triggered and turned on. Both the poplin fabric and the acrylic behind the poplin required multiple material proofs using varying ink densities.

What were the results of the project?

The client is very happy with how the concept was achieved as part of their overall interactive exhibit.
