Please describe the project specifications

45’(L) x 22(W) x 8.7’(H) two sided retractable sail with a 9.5 degree pitch. Supported by (6) 4” diameter stainless steel columns, and rotating center beam.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client was in need of a shade structure to cover a previously unusable palm-lined terrace.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The SunSquare axis 80 used in this project offers a unique blend of visual aesthetics and practicality. The sails automatically retract in wind speeds greater than 25 mph thus preventing possible damage due to excess tension. When fully retracted, those draped in its shadow are protected from up 86% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. This blend turns this very sunny location into a very comfortable daily dining location. What made this project more complex is the location of the Palm trees outlining the dining area within the terrace.

What were the results of the project?

The 785 square feet of shade that the Axis 80 provides has allowed the use of the terrace even on the sunniest of days all without disrupting the nature surrounding the dining area. The intention of this design is to make the space usable while retaining much of the original charm found in the use of the surrounding greenery.
