Please describe the project specifications

A custom frame, freestanding canopy, which is the combination of retractable roof systems and tension sail structures enclosed with retractable exterior screens, cover the 1,535 square foot area located on the waterfront dining terrace of Lido Bayside Grill restaurant, part of the Standard Hotel, Miami Beach. The canopy structure allows the users to fully enjoy outdoor activities with 100% sun and rain protection. The fabric shades have the ability to withstand the wind up to 175 mph winds when fully retracted, and 30 mph in its open position.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client of this project, The Standard Hotel, Miami Beach, was looking for a freestanding shade structure to cover the waterfront dining terrace of Lido Bayside Grill restaurant, with the ability to withstand high wind gust and fully protect from the elements. However, they were also looking for something that matched the theme of the restaurant — Sun-Kissed Mediterranean. That means the shade structure needed to create a look that stood out while blending with the surroundings in perfect harmony. The structure does not only cover and fully protect the users from sun, wind, and rain, but also allow them to enjoy the outdoor space at anytime.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The unique part of this project is that this shade structure is the combination of 3 types of shade products — retractable roof system, tension sails, and retractable exterior screens — that work together to create the ultimate shaded area. The major challenge in this project is the weather, which affected the construction and installation process. The structure is also located on the wooden deck, above a body of salt water and strong wind gust zone. The solution that the engineer recommended was using the 3” Magnum standard with 8” diameter galvanized shaft and 10” diameter helix, installed 18’ to 25’ per wingerter lab. Moreover, the site location is isolated from the main street, creating difficulty in transportation of tools and material. The best solution was to transport everything by boat.

What were the results of the project?

The canopy structure accomplished the goal with its standout looking that allow the users to enjoy outdoor dining, and provide a great protection from the elements.
