Please describe the project specifications

The Los Establos Structure was a 45,000 square foot Equestrian Stadium built in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The structure is meant to be a permanent installation.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client requested an A-Frame structure to house their competition arena for Equestrian events. They required that the structure be newly fabricated, meet local codes and be rated for hurricane force winds. The client also requested that we provide HVAC to cool and heat the structure year round.

The structure encompassed hospitality areas, bleacher seating and access to the horse stables. A bumpout wing was also created for athlete and equestrian veterinarian emergency services.

What is unique or complex about the project?

A major complexity of this project was a mix of the locale and turnaround time required to meet the client’s timeframe for the season opener. Raw materials had to be acquired and then fabricated. We also had to take into account the sea freight time. This structure was manufactured and delivered in a 5 week timeframe.

The requirement for branding on the tops also proved to be challenging. Because of the limited lead time, fabrication and printing of the vinyl material had to overlap to minimize the lag between processes.

Additional bracing was added to the columns of the structure to provide additional wind resistance. Extended Keystones were created to maximize the rigidity of the traversing beams. These elements allowed the structure to outperform the client specs in terms of uplift requirements and vertical and lateral loading.

What were the results of the project?

The client was very satisfied, and the structure is still use daily to this day.
