Please describe the project specifications

A new custom home built in Portola Valley with an outdoor room as a transition area between the house and the pool. The open girder construction extended the roofline of the house.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The customer required shade but not rain protection and desired a tensioned shade cloth roof to provide shade. Rather than create a shadesail with catenary curves and anchor points the customer wanted a flush edge and clean geometric lines.

What is unique or complex about the project?

In order to create the flush, tensioned edges we had to create a framework to attach aluminum tensioning rails to the sides of the roof. We used 2 1/2" x 3" 3/8 steel angle bolted to the perimeter of the structure and provide a new peak for the cloth to tension over smoothly. Rails were drilled for the tension rail and powder coated to match the existing framework. The aluminum tension rails were also powder coated.

We used a 90% Monotec 370 shade cloth for it's strength and durability. The edges used kedar to slide into the tensioning rails.

What were the results of the project?

A very pleased customer and a beautiful outdoor room that allows air flow and visibility through the roof to the many oak trees around the property.
