(8) 20 foot by 20 foot center standard gorillaBrellas in the newly renovated plaza of Talking Stick Resort Arena, home of the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and performance arena for many large artists and acts.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

During a $100,000 remodel of the entry plaza, the client requested a solution to increase usable space for various vendors at a variety of functions. Eight permanent umbrella structures were manufactured and constructed to flow with existing architectural elements of the plaza. Brand recognition for the sponsor group of the plaza played a key role in the color scheme chosen.

What is unique or complex about the project?

To comply with City of Phoenix design requirements, all trees displaced by installing the gorillaBrellas were required to be replaced or relocated. They also required the gorillaBrellas comply with fire lane restrictions for the City, therefore low points on the gorillaBrellas were designed at 14 feet. The high points on the shade sail were designed at 19 feet, creating appropriate twist and design appeal. Special excavation measures were taken, as the area had underground utilities that tied into the downtown Phoenix infrastructure.

What were the results of the project?

Many thousands of spectators utilize the newly renovated plaza during professional basketball events, concerts, and other performance events. A positive customer relationship has developed with this client, and although no future projects are planned, exposure to neighboring businesses and stadiums may lead to future work.
