Please describe the project specifications

Designed to mirror the hair of the iconic Troll dolls, our Coronation Pod structure anchored the Dreamworks exhibit at Licensing Expo 2016. The fantastical walk-in structure was a focal point that enhanced the exhibit’s sense of place – a vibrant, colorful, texture-rich Trolls landscape right out of the upcoming fall 2016 movie.

The pod’s opening spanned more than 11 ft. across while the dome-like structure rose to nearly 12 ft. in height, and tapered to a width of 22 in. at the top.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The exhibit was part of what studio representatives have referred to as its largest merchandising effort in support of a film. With its large entryway and inviting look, the Coronation Pod needed to serve as a merchandise showcase, and was also an in-booth discussion destination.

To get the signature Troll look, the pod’s “hair” exterior was constructed of Monkey Fur fabric tensioned over the 2 in. aluminum tube framing, while the interior surface was Moss Knit fabric which we printed pink to specified PMS. Together, the fabrics' pillowcase construction provided a precise fit; internal tunnels allowed the interior fabric to contour to the unique dome shape. The client’s airbrush artist produced the color patterns on the pod’s exterior.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This marked the first time we used Monkey Fur fabric, which is also one of the thickest fabrics we have worked with. We had the fabric treated in order to meet and document fire retardancy requirements. To deliver the desired effect, the nap of the fabric’s hair points upward, compared to typical usage of the fabric type where the nap is pointing downward.

What were the results of the project?

The exhibit was highly-trafficked and described as “incredible” by attendees. Visitors made their way past central reception to view the pod at the rear of the space. With vivid, big hair being such an integral part of who the Trolls are, the pod tied directly into the hair imagery used as a key graphical and promotional element for the characters and their movie.
