Please describe the project specifications

A fabric structure was designed and constructed in a theme park in Hong Kong to provide an a practical but aesthetic cover for an outdoor performance stage. A custom saddle-span design utilising metallic bronze fabric and a matching paint system were chosen for the project to give a futuristic finish to the structure and meet the theming of the interactive show.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The custom saddle-span structure is a feature shade solution to an entertainment venue within a Hong Kong theme park to meet the theming of the interactive show.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The client requested a unique metallic fabric be used for the structure to match the metallic paint system, providing a quality finish.
Design was an interesting element of this project as the structure not only had to meet the aesthetic requirements of the client, but it also had to be physically strong to endure the environment. The structure was designed to withstand very large ‘typhoon strength’ wind loads, requiring large steelwork, supporting struts, and over/under cables.
A complex element of the project was designing a functional structure that was to be positioned in a very small area within the theme park. There were no footings, as the structure was bolted to the framing of the stage below (designed by others).
The design also took into account large water loads, in which water flow is diverted to large sumps using foam-core filled pockets.
Installation was difficult due to a few contributing factors. Site access was very restrictive, and the program was intense to be able to meet the set opening date. We were not contracted to install the structure, but 3 of our technicians were requested to go to site and supervise the install.

What were the results of the project?

The result of this project is a functionally aesthetic shade solution. The canopy provides shelter for theatrical performances, interactive shows and memorabilia displays. The client was extremely happy with the look and functionality of the canopy which married well with the theming requirements.
