Lite Skin® is DIMENSION-POLYANT's latest development in surface technology. Lite Skin® is a patent-pending super lightweight, nonwoven, abrasion resistant surface component that provides multifaceted benefits for yacht sails, and other technical fabrics.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Lite Skin® was developed to increase the durability and usable lifespan for recreational yacht sails with a minimal weight penalty. Laminated sailcloth is inherently susceptible to UV degradation. The addition of a Lite Skin® component to sailcloth reduces the effect of UV exposure and virtually eliminates any shrinkage due to flex for a much improved lifespan.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This is the first use of very thin, light, flexible, non-woven polyester for a UV, waterproof, and abrasion resistant outdoor fabric. Typically non-wovens laminated to film are very brittle, but with Lite Skin® a totally new category of benefits have been established due to the skin effect obtained by the unique coating and layering processes. Two years of R&D and real-world testing were done prior to commercializing the product.

What were the results of the project?

The development of Lite Skin® for yacht sails resulted in sails that are more durable, extending the lifespan and value for the customer, while limiting shrinkage and damage from UV light. Lite Skin®'s increased abrasion resistance has not only been recognized by sailors but also, other outdoor enthusiasts who choose to manufacture packs and bags using Lite Skin®.
