Please describe the project specifications

A compact trade show booth backdrop created with a multi-faced fabric environment and a hand-painted multi-layered graphic image of angel wings.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

When Transformit set out to create a new compact booth for events industry trade shows, Cynthia Thompson, Transformit’s founder and owner, wanted to highlight the possibilities of working with mesh fabric to create a multi-layered graphic image. Equally, she wanted to design the trade show booth around one of Transformit’s existing pieces that is available for rent by event producers. And perhaps most of all, Cynthia wanted the booth to be unique, fun and interactive. Her idea was to paint a set of angel wings and invite show attendees to “be an angel” — stand in front of the wings and have their photo taken.

The piece had to work in a 10' x 10' booth, so Cynthia worked with a modified version of Transformit's stock ready-made "Cherub."

What is unique or complex about the project?

The angel wings on the "Cherub" are hand-painted on two fabric faces, an opaque Symmetry in the rear with a transparent mesh in the front. Employing the graphic layering technique common in theatrical sets, Cynthia painted elements of the wings on both fabric faces to give the image depth and fluidity.

What were the results of the project?

The completed piece is an 8’x8’ 'Angel' "Cherub" with hand-painted angel wings. Using versatile and compact battery powered LED lights, each face of the "Cherub" was lit to make the painted wings visually pop, creating a dazzling set of wings that were a big hit as a photo backdrop for the many angels visiting Transformit’s booth. Attendees were drawn to the booth by the painted wings, often before they knew Transformit created fabric structures. Of the booth Thompson said, “Since it was art, people were more fascinated.”
