Please describe the project specifications
The project consisted of a roof for the minerals store of the company Impala Terminals, belonging to the Swiss group Transfigura. With an area of 120,000 sqm with heights up to 35 sqm.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
The purpose of the project was: To protect the environment due to the high pollution emitted by the minerals; to have great spacing between the columns in order to maintain the usual operation of the warehouse; and achieve a space sufficient ventilation and natural lighting so that no electrical energy is used during the day.
In order to respond to these requirements, the space was organized with a series of modules that were adapted to the different irregularities of the terrain and which also had low structural density. The cover was solved with 76 modules whose areas vary from 800 to 3075 sqm.
The typical module is made up of two inclined arches that buckle together in the central part where the ventilation theatine has been placed; at the bottom they are supported by the arches of the contiguous modules; the arches are supported on concrete columns of 10 sqm. Of height, the central columns receive four arcs and the perimetral two arcs. On the columns have been placed the elements for the evacuation of rains.
The spaces formed between the arches allow to place the double-curved membranes whose continuity generates a wavy geometry in the total set. The perimeter of the warehouse is formed by vertical arches where meshes have been placed to achieve adequate ventilation.
What is unique or complex about the project?
The most complex of the project was to achieve the spacing between the columns that was up to 75 sqm linear, also the location of these should be in areas where it does not interrupt the operation of the warehouse.
What were the results of the project?
The customer was very satisfied with the project, communicating with pride the new image of his warehouse; by the way, they requested to cover additional areas to the initially projected.
