Please describe the project specifications

The retractable roof system covers the outdoor kitchen area and extends outward over the deck. The frame is painted with a Kynar finish for its high resistance to UV light and improved color and gloss retention. The retractable system is belt driven and the motor with its housing is covered by flashing to provide a smoother appearance from above. To add style, a secondary bottom liner was added with a swaging feature.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The architectural layout of our client’s multi-million-dollar home includes a two-story main building overlooking the pool and deck area. They wanted to protect their outdoor kitchen and bar from the elements while maintaining their gorgeous intracoastal view.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Living in Florida next to the intracoastal, a fixed structure is important because of the various weather conditions that occur in the area. However, we still needed the retractable top feature so that our customers could enjoy the sun or the stars. The appearance of the retractable awning seems symmetric, however; the awning is designed to be asymmetric allowing for the rain water to flow downward into the landscape instead of onto the wooden bar and deck.

What were the results of the project?

The clients were delighted with the result. The design added a functional elegance to their deck complimenting the overall appearance of their property. They were more than happy to spend their time with family and friends grilling in their newly accentuated backyard.
