Please describe the project specifications

The customer a Tavern owner in the popular, hip (cooler than cool) Wynwood area of Miami, Florida requested a massive 36’3” wide x 27’10” projection attached 3 span (4 post) water proof retractable patio pergola cover system with single sided water drainage so that rain water would drain away from the Tavern patrons. The entire system used one continuous piece of fabric and one motor. The system frame and guides are made entirely of aluminum which is powder coated using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Custom color for the frame is Grigio (Iron Grey). The stainless-steel components used were Inox (470LI and 316) which are of the highest quality and have an extremely high corrosion resistance. In fact, the components meet the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy.

Fabric used was Ferrari 302 Precontraint Color Bianco P8100, a PVC fabric that is self-extinguishing (fire retardant) and totally water-proof (not water-resistant). This retracting patio cover system has a Beaufort wind load rating Scale 9 (up to 54mph).

A grey hood with end caps was also used to prevent rain water, leaves, bird droppings and debris from collecting in the folds of fabric when not in use.

A running profile which runs from end to end in the rear of the unit was not necessary as the Somfy RTS motor which is installed inside a motor safety box was attached to the wall instead of a running profile.

The client chose to control the motorized retractable pergola awning with a remote control.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project was simple - To provide heat, sun, glare and UV protection for customers so they could sit outside the entire year and most importantly to allow the area outside the Tavern to be used during a heavy rainstorm a frequent occurrence in the summer months in South Florida.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The many angles and configuration of the surrounding walls and seating areas made the installation extremely challenging. In addition, the client was on a very tight deadline for a grand opening. The retractable patio pergola system was installed prior to the grand opening.

What were the results of the project?

The client is very satisfied with the results of his retractable patio pergola cover system. The retractable patio cover now makes it possible for the client and his customers to use a very large area in the rear of the Tavern throughout the year as the area is now protected from sun, UV, glare, heat, heavy rains and even hail. Mission accomplished – All customer requirements were achieved with 100% satisfaction!
