Please describe the project specifications

This project involved the expansion of an existing used car dealership. Among other works, the expansion required a new parking lot. The structural section of the pavement presents top bottom 1 ½ inch of asphalt and 2 feet of selected compacted fill over the existing subgrade.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

In a growing market area, the expansion will increase sales, permitting the car dealership to stock more cars in a larger parking lot. The client was looking for a product that could stabilize the subgrade and make the pavement last longer.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Beyond being a region with a high ground water table, especially during the rainy season, the geotechnical investigation showed the presence of concrete and steel debris in different areas of the subgrade. In order to prevent differential settlements and to bridge the voids caused by the debris, TenCate Mirafi® RS280i was specified to provide reinforcement, separation between the dissimilar soil layers, filtration, drainage and interaction with the soils and aggregates.

What were the results of the project?

Both the designer and contractor are very satisfied with the adopted solution and the results. The job was easily and rapidly executed, since they didn’t have to undercut and remove the debris from the subgrade and due to the simple installation process the Mirafi® RS280i requires. The use of Mirafi RS280i provided approximately 40% of cost savings in comparison to solutions without geosynthetics.
