Please describe the project specifications

This is a custom curved shaped canopy fabricated and installed for a State of the Art (7) Story School Facility. The canopy covers an outdoor patio area of a special Sports Leadership and Management Charter School. The canopy covers an area that is 58’-0” wide x 34’-0” projection. Ultrashade USP 123 Stoplight Red fabric is the fabric selected for the cover.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client is a School for Sports Leadership and Management. They have a building across from the main campus that has additional classrooms and an outdoor patio area for students to fellowship and spend time outdoors. The architect involved with the school designed a curved canopy to provide weather protection and shade for students, so they would be able to use the space throughout the year.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The structure of the canopy had to be built to the Florida Building Code. [4’x4’x3’ and 4’x4’x2’] Large engineered footings 14’-0” apart had to be coordinated, leveled and installed properly to support the (8) columns of the canopy. Special circular receiver plates were welded to the top to receive the frame structure. The frame structure has an arched radius of 145/-0” to match the Architect’s design and cantilevers 4’-0” on each side. Engineered trusses were made for the wind loads and precisely installed to fit.

What were the results of the project?

The principal, teachers and students were very excited and pleased with their new outdoor canopy area. They enjoy using the outdoor space of the area, now that it is covered. The students and faculty are all focused on sports related curriculuma and careers and this new area also gives them another area for outdoor activities when needed. They especially appreciate how the canopy keeps them cool and protected from the intense rays of the sun or tropical downpours during the summer and fall seasons. It’s a great space!
