What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

A.R. Chesson Construction contacted TensionStructures.com to design-build a tensile shade structure to compliment The Soundside Outer Banks Event Site in Nags Head, NC. The Soundside site is utilized by the local community for weddings, festivals, fairs and events offering a remarkable venue with beautiful sunsets, wide open spaces and a scenic view of the Roanoke sound.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The tension structure was built with extremely strong members and components engineered for 130 MPH hurricane wind loads. A three part epoxy paint covers the robust frame to ensure the salt water does not corrode this ocean front drop off canopy. Stainless steel cables and a heavy-duty Serge Ferrari PVC membrane fabrics simultaneously provide high strength and elegant charm.

What were the results of the project?

The freestanding triple-coned tensioned fabric structure was successfully fabricated and installed, and is an iconic landmark for the Soundside Event Site and the Town of Nags Head for community events throughout the year.
