Please describe the project specifications

3 bow spray dodger with opening front U window.
Maximum amount of clear for vision and looks.
Zippers for other covers to attach.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

We have done many boats for this client and I was asked to produce something different to the normal production boat spray dodgers that we supply for this type of boat.
The function is primarily to provide protection from from the elements while sailing or at anchor, but also as the front foundation for other covers to zip to to help create an outdoor living space while onboard.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The client liked the style that is the norm for smaller boats and wanted the same look on this bigger boat. The challenge was the length fore and aft that needed coverage, approximately 2.2mt (7 feet) because of a large companionway.
This was overcome with the addition of a third frame to support the roof span.
Another challenge was the area of the boat where the cover and frame needed to mount. It was very narrow meaning that if the spray dodger was made within this area, it would look very high and boxy sitting on the cabin top.
The frame is mounted well inboard on the cabin top while the cover floats off the frame to attach to the outside of the cabin. This gave a tapered look to the dodger which reduced the risk of it looking to high. The frame also tapers forward i.e. each frame is a little narrower as it goes forward.
We installed as much clear as possible to reduce the amount of canvas on the sides to again make it look smaller than it really is.

What were the results of the project?

Our client was more than happy with the look and function of this spray dodger. It is a unique boat because of this and stands out when berthed next to similar sized yachts.
When all set up, it is very comfortable to spend time in the cockpit whether it's sunny and hot, or rainy and cold, and when at sea, as much protection as possible has been achieved.
