Please describe the project specifications

A custom stainless steel rigid frame work that is supported by the radar arch and welded forward legs, leaving a minimally obstructed view. A large enclosed forward visor with openings to the inside that provide dry storage for items such as charts and binoculars. At the center of the visor, an opening adjustable with tandem zippers, provides ventilation in any weather. Smoke Sunbrella stretched tight over the length with Navy Top Gun reinforcement around the perimeter providing strength for the extreme tension. While challenging and requiring multiple people with a specific assembly order, Top Gun zipper pockets allow for removal of the top for cleaning. Center windshield and side panels fold up and into a custom pocket for safe keeping. Two aft windows slide side to side or together and fold up into a pocket for safe keeping. Track to track construction eliminated all but two Lift The Dot snaps used for tension. A track around the bottom and mid rail provide the perfect tension for the aft skirt.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose for this job was to provide a leak proof temperature controlled and quiet environment with maximum visibility due to the fly bridge being the only helm. A rigid top in lieu of an expensive fiberglass hard top that is strong enough for 70mph winds, configurable ventilation for any northwest weather and a sleek look that emphasizes the fast profile of the boat.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The unique aspect of this top is the way the visor was constructed to be a hollow, water tight and usable space for storage. The visor was divided into three sections; the left and right sides are closed off to provide the storage and the center is openable for ventilation. Poly plastic sheets were cut and bent to provide a rigid floor for the storage spaces. There is a zipper opening flap at the center section to allow for dry ventilation while sitting through the changing temperatures of the day or as an air scoop while under way to assist in keeping any exhaust fumes from accumulating in the space. The side and aft windows use a unique zipper arrangement that allows for three sides to be opened with two zippers without effecting the view lines at their transitions.

What were the results of the project?

First result was a customer that could not stand still or stop talking he was so excited over the project.
Customer quote: "With the new look, we have been overwhelmed with inquiries and compliments at EVERY dock we have visited."
Results are a clean, smooth and contoured enclosure that flows with the lines of the boat. It provides great visibility and a warm/cool dry space to navigate the boat and entertain. The Makrolon AR2 windows with two zipper operations provide low maintenance windows that can be opened quickly and easily for plenty of ventilation. The overhead built in pocket system provides an easy and clean protected space to keep all the windows safe and secure while underway. The lower than normal upper view line provides ample shade while sitting and yet does not impede the view while standing for docking and rough weather navigation.
