Jeanneau 51, 3 bow spray dodger.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

To provide protection over the companionway and seating either side of companionway.
This spray dodger is also the foundation of a full cockpit enclosure behind it with zips on all trailing edges.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The size of this spray dodger proved quite a challenge. There are obvious height requirements for function as there are lounges either side of the companionway. To make sure the boat owners were able to sit in these, vertical height needed to be achieved a long way outboard. This then makes it very difficult to reduce the boxy look.
Added to this was the primary winches are a long way forward impeding on my placement of the aft tension point of the cover. Instead of compromising this, a solid st/steel support was added to the aft frame to provide necessary tension with the wing being able to be detached and rolled away. This also became a neat hand hold for those lounging underneath.

What were the results of the project?

Special attention was payed to the overall look of this dodger as to follow the rather bold lines of the boat. This almost comes second to the function that was required as my client was more interested in how it was going to work.
Both my client and myself are very happy with the end result.
The spray dodger is easy to move under for access to the lounges and below deck.
To operate the winches effectively, it take less than minute to roll the wings up and set the boat for sailing.
