Please describe the project specifications

This project is located in high-tech north district of Changchun city, Jilin province, available for audience seats 32200. The structural form of the stadium is integral tensile cable-membrane structure system and can be divided into 40 fabric units. The top of the mast is 60 meters, total projected area is about 28678 m², and surface area of membrane is about 61432 m². The roof is an elliptical and 1 / 4 symmetrical. Outer ring is in size of 255 × 249 meters and facade is a saddle shape. The roof is semi-opened, opening of inner ring is in size of 180 × 146 meters, the east and west ends are high, the north and south ends are low, the highest and the lowest elevation is about 46 meters and 37 meters respectively.
The whole roof structure system is composed of three parts: steel structure system, steel cable system and membrane system:
Steel structure system is external structure of the stadium, which consists of giant triangular steel trusses and steel columns. Upper chord steel pipes of the trusses are filled with high strength concrete; lower strings of the trusses are connected to the substructure through unidirectional radial sliding supports; outer strings are free and disconnected with the lower structure.
Steel cable system consists of inner ring cable, ridge cables, valley cables and back cables. Inner ring cable is a tensile ring subjected to great tension, which is anchored to the outer steel structure system through ridge cables, valley cables and back cables.
Membrane system is arranged between steel structure and steel cables, forming a beautiful waving surface. Membrane adopts VERSEIDAG-INDUTEX GMBH’s model B18089 PTFE fabric. Aluminum alloyed clamps and adjustable tensile screws are used to connect the boundary of fabric units and steel cables.


What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project was: a comprehensive stadium for large-scale sports competitions and civic activities, to build a landmark building for Changchun city.


What is unique or complex about the project?

The complexities of this project are as follows:
1. The external structure is complex and consists of independent mast columns and many cables. Before the structure is formed, stiffness of external structure has not been established, so it is necessary to ensure stability of external structure when constructing.
2. The superstructure (steel-cable-membrane structure) and the substructure (concrete structure) are only connected by 40 radial sliding supports, it is necessary to control the radial slippage of the supports and make real-time observation.
3. This project is in complex shape, with saddle ring cables, it is of great difficulty in shape finding analysis for cable and membrane.
4. Application of large size Galfan cables, maximum diameter is 135 mm.


What were the results of the project?

The customer was very satisfied with the project. All the customer’s requirements were met and the result exceeded their expectations.
