Please describe the project specifications

The project is a 62’-6” x 33’-6” Motorized Retractable Fabric Canopy composed of (4) individual units. The canopy sits 10’-6” off the base level of the 20th Floor of the SLS Bahamar Hotel. The custom frame structure is attached to concrete bases on the 20th floor of the Hotel. The entire structure is a custom heavy duty Powder Coated Aluminum sub-structure, that supports (4) fully motorized Retractable Fabric systems.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client’s intent was to create a beautiful rooftop bar/lounge and social seating area for their guests. They needed a viable Shade and Weather Solution that would create this Outdoor Lounge for their guests. They wanted a system that could quickly be deployed to protect the area and its guests from rain. They wanted to create a roof-top area that would allow guests to enjoy the area during all types of weather and conditions. They wanted a system with the flexibility to provide shade and weather protection when needed or to be open to the clear blue sky during the day or spectacular night sky for dining under the stars at night. The Custom Installed Retractable Canopy system is perfect for the client’s needed requests. They have the flexibility to view clear skies during spectacular weather or the protection they need for inclement weather.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Most of the complexity with this project was in the consideration of being able to place the project at the requested location on the 20th floor. A lot of planning and forethought had to go into this project, considering that the project is 62’-6” long x 33’-6” wide. Another major factor of complexity, is that there weren’t and aren’t any cranes high enough to allow the project to be lifted and dropped into place. This necessitated for the project to be detailed and fabricated in segments, such as posts and trussed members, so they could be lifted safely. Each segment was clearly marked and lifted with crew on the ground and on the roof of 20th floor. By designing and fabricating the Aluminum structure in segments, the installation of the project was able to be put together modularly in 12 steps. The assembly was organized to start on one end with 2 corner posts, the end trusses and intermediate posts, working toward the other end, adding posts and intermediate trusses, until the entire supporting structure was in place. The fabric and its components had to be placed in special 32’ long tubes. These tubes were used to package and ship the 4 motorized retractable fabric portions of the canopy. On arrival at the job site, these tubes with the fabric on the rails, also had to be lifted in place. Once on the 20th floor, the (4) sets of fabric were properly installed on the framework. All the details and programing of remote controls was synchronized and completed for the client and employees to be able to use the Motorized Retractable Canopy System.

What were the results of the project?

The Design team and Ownership of the Rooftop Bar / Restaurant were very happy and pleased with the outcome of the SLS Bahamar Skybar Motorized Canopy. They appreciate the versatility of the product much more now, since they are using it on a daily basis. They are looking forward to more of these Retractable Systems being incorporated into future projects on the jobsite, as well as existing restaurants. Ownership is pleased with how the units create a spectacular outdoor bar/lounge environment for their guests. The motorized retractable canopy system created the idyllic Rooftop Oasis for clients to take in the sun, moon or stars and enjoy cocktails. This Canopy has helped create the special place for guests to come day or night for one of the finest views in the Bahamas, no matter the weather.
