Please describe the project specifications
This project included 12 custom shade sails on the 5th, 10th, and 15th floor rooftops. These sails provide more than 5200 sq. ft. of shade covering an outdoor gym area, an open air running track, and a leisure area next to the pool and 25 person hot tub.
These sails are supported by 25 floor-mounted poles, 3 roof-mounted poles, 2 wall-mounted poles, 2 wall plates, and 4 roof tabs.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
This building is located next to Arizona State University. The purpose was to create comfortable, functional outdoor areas for the students who live there to exercise, work out and relax. These outdoor areas work together with indoor recreation areas, study rooms and retail space on the ground level to create an ideal environment for students to succeed and enjoy their college experience.
The client came to us with some initial design ideas. We worked with them to improve their designs to maximize the functionality of the sails and give them more shade.
What is unique or complex about the project?
This project is so unique because there aren’t many buildings like this in the Phoenix area, and even fewer with a pool on the roof of the 15th floor. Additionally, the project is split into three different areas on three separate rooftops.
This job was quite complex. Installation of weld plates, baseplates and attachment points had to be coordinated with the construction of the building. Structural poles had to be palletized and lifted to the correct floor with a tower crane.
What were the results of the project?
The final project is beautiful and unique, providing the student residents a one-of-a-kind experience. It creates a comfortable space for them to relax and work out so they can be successful in their studies.
