Please describe the project specifications

We manufactured two large sails and mounting hardware. Each of the two sails stretch over 100 feet from corner to corner and combined total 6380 Sq. Ft.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client wanted to add more shade to the sea lion theater for two reasons. First, the salt-water aquarium was heating up too much and it was difficult to maintain the ideal conditions for the sea lions. The shade sails bring the water temperature down 10 – 15 degrees. Second, the water was too bright for the seal lions’ health and wellbeing.
Not only did the sails need to provide shade, they needed to look good and fit in with their surroundings. The green color blends well with and compliments the surrounding foliage.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Sails this big aren’t something you see often and are truly unique in scale. As sails get larger they become more difficult to manufacture. Size and weight make sewing more difficult. It is no small task to manufacture sails this large. Additionally, custom corner hardware needs to be robust enough to adequately tension the sail. Because the zoo is in a hurricane area, these sails have to be strong to withstand the intense winds they will encounter.

What were the results of the project?

These two sails are not only an aesthetic addition to the area, they provide the shade the client needed to care for their animals. Once installed, these two huge sails make the Sea Lion Theater an even better place to sit back and enjoy the show.
