Please describe the project specifications

Custom leaf fabric structure recovers. Original frame supported leaf shaped structure we fabricated and installed in August 1999 on the rooftop of the Children’s Hospital. The structure consists of 8 leaves all varying in size from 7’2”-8’9” wide x 7’10 -10’ deep, for a total of 600 square feet of recovered fabric.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The hospital administrator requested a free-standing leaf like structure for their existing rooftop garden area to complement their flowers, plants and trees. Visitors and employees enjoy sitting in this peaceful, relaxing atmosphere on the rooftop away from inside the busy hospital and noisy ground traffic.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Fabricating frame/fabric shapes to resemble leaves all with different sizes was a unique aspect of this project. In the original installation, the structure had to be craned up to the hospital rooftop which added to the complexity of the project.

What were the results of the project?

The custom leaf structure has been enjoyed by many people over the years. The hospital is very pleased at how this fabric leaf architectural element aesthetically added to their garden area and will continue to recover in future years.
