Please describe the project specifications

Hyper Queuing Canopy for Movieworld Gold Coast Australia. A leaf inspired design to visually enhance ride attraction in addition to provide patron protection.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Our team were commissioned by Village Roadshow to develop a design for four individual custom, lightweight structures as part of their latest theme park attraction. Each structure is composed of a porous membrane fabric supported by steel work developed taking inspiration from the structure of a leaf. The structures range in length and width to suit the parks landscaping and to provide shade protection to the park guests.

The purpose of the structure was to provide an aesthetically pleasing solution to shading visitors lining up for the Hyper Coaster at Movie World. The main focus was to produce something that was innovative and eye catching but still fulfilled a practical purpose. There were a few parameters that dictated the design, the first being that the structures were required to fit into a specific area. We had to work around other design components such as the landscaping, pathway and loading area and determine the best spot to put the structures and what size they could be. The second parameter was that the line of sight to the coaster was to be maintained. With these parameters the concept evolved into the design of four “leaf like” structures made from PVC mesh. By making four individual structures we could cover the areas required whilst maintaining clearances to other structures. Using a dark coloured mesh also meant that people could see through the structures and the line of sight to the hyper coaster was maintained.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The leaf inspired design is the most striking aspect of the four structures and the early coordination with the clients was pivotal in its development to match with their existing landscaping layout and to not interfere with existing structures or any hero shots of their latest attraction. There was a high focus on the aesthetic aspect of the project. Connections were designed to look streamlined and fit in with the rest of the structure. As the Hyper Coaster was installing at the same time as well as other works such as install of the loading platform and landscaping, there was a high degree of coordination required. We had a hard deadline of the Hyper Coaster opening to meet.

What were the results of the project?

Tensile Membrane structures that are visually complementary to the overall theme of the attraction, enhanced shade protection and a striking visual landmark for patrons within the
