Installation of retractable units for The Daytona International Speedway.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Tke purpose for the installation is to provide shade for the area where security personnel would check guests bags, backpacks and purses.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The speedway did not want permanent canopies and the design had to provide a simple and minimally intrusive installation that would not interfere with the the guest queue lines and security bag check tables and would almost disappear when not in use. A single column line configuration with a continuous support beam was used to mount retractable awnings that opened in opposite directions to shade the area. Wind sensors were installed to ensure the units would stow away in bad weather conditions. The area hardscape was already in place so directional drilling had to be used to bring power to the structures.

What were the results of the project?

The canopy system creates instant shade for speedway personnel and guests at the push of a button and allows the units to be stowed away when not needed for use.
