Please describe the project specifications

Our customer on Waiheke Island, wanted a shade sail for his raised deck. We designed and installed posts with bracing fixed to the outside of his deck and support joists, based on the customer measurements and without visiting the site. Once we installed the custom designed posts we were able to measure for the shade sail and installed it on our next trip to the island.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Our customer wanted a shade sail to cover a large area on a raised deck on Waiheke Island. The deck was unusable in the heat of summer and they needed some shade. The gable end and lack of height restricted the use of a retractable awning.

What is unique or complex about the project?

We had to design a post and bracket system, engineered to be strong enough to hold the shade sail in all weather. Our shade sail specialist (and engineer) had to design the brackets from the customers pictures and measurements, and we made them without ever visiting the site to check the customers measurements. The design held the posts out on an angle from the deck and bolted through the joists under the deck on both sides and the joist end of the deck for strong fixings. The post fixings were adjustable so they could be tweaked onsite and get the right angles. Once the posts were in place we were able to measure for the shade sail. This was made and installed on our next trip to the island, about two weeks later.

What were the results of the project?

The client was very happy with the sail which met all his needs and made a previously unusable deck, usable in the heat of summer.
