Please describe the project specifications

Eight (8) columns and four (4) custom sails provide approximately 500 square feet of shade over an outdoor residential patio.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client requested a one-of-a-kind, elegant shade structure that provided functional shade and limited direct sunlight that glared through her south-facing living room windows. Preserving desert mountain views was also important to the homeowner.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The final design was a result of five rounds of conceptual renderings. The homeowner was very particular about column placement, but to address the concern about limiting direct sunlight on her living room windows, the sails needed to be pulled further away from the house. We suggested a vertical column with a cantilevered arm to accomplish her request, but that approach resembled hockey sticks to the homeowner. We agreed rolling a slight radius into the structural steel columns was a more refined solution. Two stacked sails over each patio also provide a stylish alternative to a single sail over the area.

What were the results of the project?

Not only the homeowners, but neighbors too, love the visual appeal of the newly constructed shade structures. We’ve received calls from other homeowners in the community curious about adding shade structures to their own backyard paradises.
