Please describe the project specifications

Cigarette Racing returned to The Miami International Boat Show for the 2018 event with a completely revamped exhibit. The marquee space was a 1,600 sq. ft. custom structure with flat roof decking system and fabric fascia.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The space was purposed to be a customer experience activation, giving attendees an opportunity to ride in Cigarette Racing’s “515 Mercedes AMG Project One” 3100 Horsepower performance boat. This simultaneously highlighted Mercedes Benz’ Formula One Super Car.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The client required an exhibit structure that was emblematic of the high-end exhibits one would find in the largest convention centers in the world. The major challenge with what the client wanted was the weight of the structure that would be required to achieve their preferred aesthetic. As this structure was built on to a floating dock, the ability to handle the typical uplift and moment overloading forces was significantly reduced. To overcome this issue, we worked directly with the dock manufacturers to reinforce the floats in some areas and to anchor directly to the sea bed in the basin.

Utilizing our profile with a 12”x5”, we framed out a pseudo-mezzanine structure that spanned 32’ in order to eliminate the need for any interior columns. To create the flat roof, a decking system with a waterproofing membrane was used. Structural elements of the ceiling liner were masked using a thick stretched white fabric that was secured to the aluminum members with industrial grade Velcro.

The columns of the structure were framed out with a custom built wooden configuration which was ultimately wrapped with the same stretch fabric on the ceiling. The buildings fascia was designed with steel small aluminum tube members spanning the entire roof line. Keder rails were attached to the top and bottom tubes so that the fabric graphic could be attached. The graphic itself was made of a light vinyl material with pockets built in on the back side to allow for additional tensioning.

What were the results of the project?

The structure was one of the most unique structures in the water. The client was extremely happy with the activation and final aesthetic, and we are excited to partner with them for the 2019 event.
