Please describe the project specifications

“The Family” is a Sea Jay 7.2 meter Pursuit, half cab, hard top aluminium trailer boat.

We were asked to manufacture a full storage cover to protect this beauty from the elements in a harsh tropical environment. The storage cover had to be water resistant and allow for adequate air flow to prevent mould.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

“The Family” lives on a beautiful property that backs onto the local horse racing track. It spends its days under an open wall shed watching the trees sway in the breeze and horses gallop past when not being used out on the water.
Over the past two years the owners had noticed “The Family” was collecting leaves, dust and getting wet from the tropical sideways torrential rain and decided it needed a cover to protect it from the harsh elements imposed by the tropical environment. Given the size of “The Family” washing pre and post a trips out on the water was becoming tiresome, so the owners approached us for a storage cover.
The owners requested a fabric that would be water resistant and wanted the storage cover to be able to breathe for mould protection whilst still being protected from the dust and leaves.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The biggest challenge when manufacturing the cover was the sheer enormity of the boat. As it is a very large trailer boat majority of the patterning process was done at heights above 1.8 meters.

On initial discussions with the client they requested a heavy duty PVC due to water resistance. On inspection of the boat we calculated the cover would use approximately 38meters of material at 2m wide. As this would have weighed in excess of 50kg in heavy duty PVC, we suggested they use a light weight marine canvas instead as it is much lighter and easier to handle.

The client also requested that no fixing points were to be added to the trailer or vessel. We used 6mm shock cord with UV treated hooks to achieve this result.

The cover had to be manufactured “drum tight” to allow adequate water runoff and not have water pool in any areas. The whole cover was also sewn in PTFE thread to ensure a resew would not be needed in a few years’ time.

To allow sufficient airflow we made sure there was an adequate space left open at the base of the cover at both the bow and stern of the boat. Adequate space was also left between the glass windows and the cover. This allows for airflow to travel the entire way through underneath the cover without being restricted by the hard top.

What were the results of the project?

The cover far exceeded the expectations of the client and they are extremely impressed with the quality and workmanship of the cover. “The Family” is located outside the entry to their business premise, and everyone who walks past it into their office has made a comment on how impressive the boat looks in its cover.
