Please describe the project specifications
This is an all fabric air inflatable structure 107 meter long, 40 meter wide and 26 meter high and will hose a Zeppelin NT airship operated by GoodYear.
It used 22 tons ( 46,000 lbs ) of fabric and was built in 20 sections that is joined on site. Fabric consumption was 43,000 square meters ( 440,000 sq ft ).
It has a design life of at least 20 years and a model was wind tunnel tested to 120 mph.
The front end has an eye lid opening that will open up to the full geometry of the building which is a Lindstrand patent
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
The purpose of the building is to protect the Zeppelin airship from exposure and to act as a maintenance facility particularly for the annual inspection.
There were two reason for choosing an inflatable hangar.
The first being that the operating ground is an old waste site which will seep methane gas preventing the erection of a fixed building.
The second being that should a Zeppelin airship go down anywhere in the country it will need a hangar for maintenance. This hangar can be deflated and shipped anywhere in the country
What is unique or complex about the project?
The sheer size. This structure is about 5 times bigger than the next biggest.
In spite of its size it can be inflated and deflated in less than a day with no tools
What were the results of the project?
This building was the only way GoodYear could provide a hangar facility for their airship operation in Carson
