Please describe the project specifications

The PTFE Roof Structure of Tennis Final Hall in Hangzhou Olympic Center is located in Binjiang District, Hangzhou City. It has held the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in 2018 and will undertake the 2022 Asian Games’ tennis match and other large-scale sports events.
The diameter of the project is about 94 meters, and the highest point is about 34 meters from the ground. The developed area of the roof is about 5662 square meters. The roof consists of 24 pieces of steel structural "petals" units extending to the top of the fixed roof and 8 separate units composed openable roof. Each independently rotatable petal is about 28 meters long and 20 meters wide. The largest membrane unit is about 25 square meters and the smallest is about 1 square meter.


What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of the project is to hold large-scale tennis, swimming competitions. No matter the weather is sunny or rainy, hot or cold, the openable roof can be adjusted according to different requirements.


What is unique or complex about the project?

The shape of the entire steel structures is like a lotus. The structure system is composed of fixed steel trusses and rotating openable steel trusses. The movable track is set on the upper string of the fixed steel trusses, and it takes about 15 minutes to open or close the rotatable roof at a time. In order to make the rotatable roof move stablely and accurately, we have built a special BIM model and put forward strict requirements on fabrication and installation of steel structures. PTFE fabric units are fixed tightly on the lower chord of steel trusses, with good sound absorption and beautiful effect.


What were the results of the project?

Our clients are very satisfied with the project and it has successfully held the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25M) in December, 2018. The project meets the function of holding sports competitions in different seasons and plays a great role in attracting tourists, which achieved great social and economic benefits for Hangzhou.
