Please describe the project specifications

My First Skool LCCC at Punggol is sited on a 10,000sqm plot at the junction of Punggol Drive and Punggol Place. This LCCC will be one of the first large childcare centres catering for early learning of 1000 infants and children from ages 0-4 years old.


What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The project aims to provide an environment for learning and growing through play and interaction – one that is highly naturalistic to enhance the children’s sensorial and relational experiences.
The project is provided with pockets of landscape that contain a wide variety of play opportunities under both indoor and outdoor conditions. We envision the landscape areas to be an exploratory play area for the children, where they can have a chance to encounter “nature” and learn about herbs, shrubs and trees in a protected environment.


What is unique or complex about the project?

With a LRT viaduct cutting across one corner of the site, the 3-storey building consists of 2 triangular-lozenge-shaped pods connected by a centre thoroughfare. Each pod features a high-volume piazza space sheltered by tensile membrane roofs.
The most complex part of this project is to achieve the original concept of architect through precise design process of cutting patterns and excellent installation works. This requires our engineers to take in to account the properties of PTFE materials, and the material deformation during fabrication.


What were the results of the project?

The project has been installed and finished and was put into use. The membrane structure creates a high-volume piazza space, and explores more play area for the children.
