Please describe the project specifications

The project land is triangular, construction area of 3,900 square meters, the height of the building is 23 meters. After completion, the project will be mainly used for the cultivation and management of tropical plants.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The design takes an oval shell as the starting point and adjusts the shape in combination with the terrain. The whole shell is divided by the double cross shaped steel frame, 558 nos of ETFE cushions as roof cladding to create a natural and dynamic botanical garden.

What is unique or complex about the project?

ETFE film as the main material of the botanical garden roof which solves the dilemma that the traditional shell structure must be use triangular shaped panels to match the wave. And the flexible and inflatable ETFE cushion surface can well fit the Architect's expected structure form. Due to tropical rainforest plant requires perennial temperature kept at 5 ~ 35 ℃, but the Dongguan local high temperature and high humidity in summer. The client require to design 118 nos of electric open window on the ETFE structure, these could help to remove indoor heat through natural ventilation in the summer. The project is also the first botanical garden project in China that adopt the ETFE inflatable membrane structure.

What were the results of the project?

The project is currently the first botanical garden project in China which used the ETFE inflatable membrane structure. The owner was quite satisfied with our work.
