Please describe the project specifications

We used Tan Sunbrella to create over 110' of teak covers for this 1988 44' Ocean Yacht. This was the second project for us on this boat, we did the enclosure as well one year ago.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

My customer wanted teak covers that could stay in place even when the boat is running, he loved my idea of making them out of the Tan Sunbrella so he still had the teak look.

What is unique or complex about the project?

There were several challenges to this project, starting with having to fit while the boat was on a mooring, as well as having only 3 days to complete. I used Canvex to fit with, using the existing studs in the cockpit of the boat, but forward of the cockpit I only added 2 snap studs at the bow sprit. I realized as I was fitting this, I could use the boats natural curve, and 2" lip on the edge of the rail to leverage itself into place. All of his cleats are accessible and re-enforced on the inside as well as the outside where bumper lines will hang. The covers actually secure themselves into place just using the shape of the boat.

What were the results of the project?

At the end of the 3 day project, my customer immediately headed out on an 8-10 hour cruise back to San Diego from Redondo Beach, and everything stayed in place perfectly. I'm very excited to have found an exceptional alternative to sand bags and fasteners. The longest distance I was able to create without any fasteners was 26 feet.
