Please describe the project specifications
The Heineken House at Coachella 2019 was a 6400 sq.ft. custom aluminum framed structure that was a fresh new take on the brand’s 18th consecutive desert activation. A major requirement was that the space not only be an upscale venue within the venue, but that it be an art installation that fulfills the look and feel that the music festival goes for.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
The client wanted to refresh the experience of the 2019 Coachella Heineken House. The talented lineup was only one approach at doing this. The client asked for us to design, manufacture and install futuristic aircraft-like winged structure that reached skyward, and had a visible roofing footprint from within the main festival grounds. This structure needed to have a unique look and feel, and also elicit some sort of response from those viewing It from a distance, as well as from within its footprint.
What is unique or complex about the project?
The 2019 Heineken House was a very complex design and install. To meet the client’s demands, the structure was designed and engineered to exceed code requirements. The connections were especially difficult due to the eccentric angles on the roof line, but also on the columns that supported the cantilevered roof. This pitch made the roof visible to those within the main festival grounds, but also gave interior of the structure a more open and inviting feel.
To install the main frame of the structure, a significant amount of crane and aerial work was required. The roof of the structure was built in a grid form. The individual grids were filled with roofing panels that were white on the exterior, but faced with a metallic film on the interior. This was to give a reflective mirroring effect within that space that gave attendees a deeper visual experience. The structure’s profile was significantly reinforced to allow the framing to support the substantial weight over significant spans without columns, while still having allowance for A/V rigged elements.
Vinyl wall panels and vinyl graphics on the exterior face of the structure had to be asymmetrically fabricated due to the diamond wing like shape. With printed graphics, this is always challenging, and requires precision in order to allow for the graphic to be properly tensioned. These pieces served as a canvas for drawing in festival goers on the main venue side of the structure while also serving as light blockage on the interior.
What were the results of the project?
The build and install were a success, and this iteration of the Heineken House has been seen as a vast improvement on the consumer experience. Not only did the structure serve its purpose as a venue within the venue, but it was viewed as one of the many different art installations at Coachella 2019.
