Please describe the project specifications

Formula E’s return to New York City for the 2018 E-Prix featured an increase in options for GA and VIP guests’ experience. In particular, ABB’s brand featured prominently, not only with their own activation space, but also by being a primary sponsor of one of the primary hospitality spaces, The FE Race Suites.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

We were tasked with building out a hospitality structure for the Formula E Race Suites, as well as a brand activation space for the electronic racing series’ title sponsor, ABB. Both spaces required a premium look and feel, with microscopic attention to details and finishes.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The hospitality space designed to be a multi-level structure that was partially enclosed along three sides, and open on the track facing side. This was done to give clients an opportunity to feel as close as possible to the track, while still being able to be comfortable in an air-conditioned space in New York’s summer heat. The structure was cladded with white vinyl roofing panels, stacked glass panels and stacked ABS plastic hard wall panels. Track side of the structure was finished with ABB branded glass rails that allowed guests to get be as close to the action as safely possible.

The lower level of the structure was divided into two equal 2,000 sq. ft. spaces to house two individual brands. Modular flooring was used on the lower level to raise guests above the raise guests above the race fence for better visibility of the track. Interior walls and ceiling were treated with a white Celtic Cloth liner to minimize exposure of structural hardware.

By contrast, the upper level was an open floorplan that was similarly treated as the lower level. The ceiling and walls were treated with the same fabric liner, while a mix of carpet colors treated the upper level’s deck. Art Walls were installed along the perimeter of the upper level and applied with graphics and A/V elements to give guests an interactive experience. A fabric mesh graphic was also installed on the structure’s parapet to highlight the event’s title sponsor.

ABB’s activation space was a 1,650 sq. ft. flat roof structure that spanned 33’ without the need for interior columns. Developing the structure was a challenging feat as it was required to support some audio visual elements as well as provide the uplift and overturning resistance required. The ceiling was treated with a stretch fabric roof liner that was cut in specific locations to allow lighting and audio elements to be properly mounted and exposed. A gray anti-slip floor was applied to the raised deck as the majority of the structure was exposed to the elements. The roofline of the structure was built with a hard-backed parapet framing system that allowed for a higher end graphic application for the client.

What were the results of the project?

The 2018 Formula E NYC ePrix was a huge success, and we look forward to working with the event and its global and local brand sponsors over the upcoming seasons.
