Please describe the project specifications

This project features (5) finely finished custom motorized retractable canopies on the sandy beach of Great Cruz Bay. The main canopy is 54’-0”wide x 36’-0”projection and has a 2’-8” height and a clearance of 9’-4”; total of 12’-0”. There are also (4) more smaller custom motorized units that are 11’-7 ½” wide x 21’-7 ½” projection x 2’-8” in height that tie together with the main canopy – (2) positioned on each side. The fabric for the canopies is a waterproof mesh, Soltis W96 in white translucent fabric.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Being in the tropics, the resort owner wanted to create an exceptional and inviting tropical outdoor space for guests to enjoy and cool off while enjoying their meals, snacks or tropical drinks in the Snorkels Bar and Grill area. It was very important for them to feature and accentuate their gorgeous water and sunset views from any location under the canopies. They only had an open deck space and needed shade and rain protection for guests because of the year round hot tropical climate. The client also wanted to be able to use the space, under the large deck, for special themes and entertainment. Another criteria that the client wanted was a clean design that would harmonize with the architecture of the resort.

What is unique or complex about the project?

What added to the complexity of the project was the fact that the project is overseas. For this reason, all of the frame work was modularly designed for transport in shipping containers and for ease of assembly. Being on the waterfront, the project was designed using large aluminum members for all of the frame work and posts; and powder coated with a textured white finish. Columns and beams were designed to fit and splice or sister together with bolts. The main canopy consists of (2) retractable units that can work separately and has (3) Corradi B-Space runners per unit. The fabric goes to the back under a special fixed barrel or arched canopy that is tied into the framework. This is for the fabric to tuck under. The 2’-8” marquee style perimeter has side panels with a star screen fabric that diffuses light in the evening to create a romantic glow around the area. The smaller retractable units, to the side, are designed the same way as the main unit and can be operated independently. When it rains, water flows to the side gutters that drain to the side posts.

What were the results of the project?

The client is thrilled with the outdoor space that the motorized retractable canopies created for their Restaurant and Grill. Being right on the sand and steps away from the shore line, it is the perfect place to enjoy any meal or special occasion. The canopies, provide the shade and weather protection that guests need after enjoying activities around the resort or island. Guests can enjoy tropical cuisine and elegant sunsets throughout the year! The clean lines of the canopies feature picture perfect views from every angle. The canopies assisted in creating the perfect spot for quiet relaxation or entertaining guests. These canopies also provide guests with an amazing outdoor space that allows them to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Great Cruz Bay while indulging in Caribbean-infused cuisine.
