Please describe the project specifications
Nine square steel columns support four large tensioned shade sails, which provide 2,129 square feet of shade over an outdoor congregation area.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
This church patio sat mostly unused because the bright Arizona sun reflected light and heat off the pavement. Church board members approached us and requested assistance in creating a more comfortable environment, focusing on mornings, so that members of the church could gather and relax.
What is unique or complex about the project?
The design of this patio came with a handful of challenges. The picturesque Catalina Mountain range lies due East of the church, and the client requested that their view not be obstructed by the design of the shade structure for the courtyard between the campus buildings. Also, the church requested that we avoid any attachments on the buildings themselves, so the placement of our columns had to be very well planned within the relatively confined courtyard.
What were the results of the project?
The result is a functional and exclusive design that frames the picturesque Catalina Mountains. The church was thrilled with our installation, and is currently working with us on a third design for more shade.
