Please describe the project specifications

This project consists of one shade structure made up of four columns connected by a steel frame around the top, and two layered shade sails.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

This shade structure was placed next to a pond and a grassy area within a small commercial park. The client wished to provide shade over an outdoor seating/break area in the location but wanted something with more of an aesthetic focus than a simple pavilion structure.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Initially, this project was proposed with a single shade sail, and four embedded standalone columns with standard deep pier footings. Because it was to be located within a few feet of the adjacent pond, the design required reevaluation and re-engineering to achieve proper structural stability. The columns closest to the water were changed to a base plated, spread footing design, and the top frame was added, connecting all four columns and distributing the force load that those footings could no longer support. Additionally, the inclusion of a second shade sail beneath the first enhanced the structure’s appearance with a pleasant contrast in shade cloth colors.

What were the results of the project?

The redesign of the project and the addition of a second shade sail transformed the structure from a standard hypar shade sail design into a unique, visually striking, and functional installation.
