Please describe the project specifications

This project consists of two (2) 36'w x 26'p retractable canopies (PergoTenda B-Space, by Corradi) gabled to make the roof of an outdoor pavilion for the city owned golf course and event venue.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The city sought to create their own space to be able to host weddings and events in an outdoor setting, eliminating costly tent rentals and providing a more attractive outdoor venue. They requested a space that was flexible and connected to the venue and golf course. We discussed many design options and decided upon the retractable units for the briefness of the structure required, and the ease of removing the fabric from the snow load. This also worked to achieve the high lofty feel the architect desired.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The most unique element about this project is that it is built directly above the main sewer line for the entire city. Due to that fact, the city and the architect wanted the center of the structure to be completely removable if needed. The 20"x8" HSS tubes supporting the units are mechanically fastened to the permanent structure and can be detached when required. With only two runner beams in the center of each space, the hope is that if equipment needs to be brought in, they can work within the openings, avoiding the removal of any structure. (Also why there are no posts).

Additional complexity was the slipping of the construction schedule, which meant we were installing these units in sub-freezing January and February. At over 20' high at the peak, working with lifts meant we often had to snow plow to continue installation.

What were the results of the project?

The city has been able to utilize the venue extensively in both sunny and inclement weather (they've had ample opportunity to test this year). They are quite pleased with the additional space and the revenue the pavilion brings. The space has a nice flow with the elimination of the posts and allows for a good party space. Everyone included feels this was quite successful.
