Please describe the project specifications

Adamson Associates, Inc. Los Angeles office provided full architectural services including specifying 4 outdoor free-standing retractable waterproof pergola systems for the new 9 story, 325,000 square foot Simplot headquarters in Boise, Idaho.

The architect specified a contemporary and very clean appearing product that would dissipate rainwater and meet the Boise, Idaho Building Code including seismic requirements. To drain the water to one side of each unit, the fabric was cut at a slight angle between each of the left to right extrusions (windbreak bars) within the fabric, creating a V, thus allowing the water to drain to one side of each unit.

Each of the units uses one continuous piece of fabric. The system frame and guides specified are made entirely of powder coated 6063 non-rusting aluminum using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Frame and guide color chosen by the interior designer was RAL 7006 Beige Grey. The stainless-steel components specified were Inox (470LI and 316) that are of the highest quality and have extremely high corrosion resistance. In fact, the components passed the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy.

Fabric specified was waterproof Ferrari Precontraint 502 White 502V2-8102, a fabric that is fire retardant meeting the NFPA 701 standard. An iron-grey hood was requested for the rear of each unit to prevent rainwater, leaves, bird droppings and debris from collecting in the folds of fabric when not in use. Motorization was requested and installed for all four units

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Top on the list of priorities for the client was several (4) covered waterproof spaces in different locations where employees and visitors can enjoy a meal. Two units were also designated as outdoor smoking areas something that has become more important for corporations over the last few years.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Two things were unique about this project:

1. Special cranes had to be used to hoist the wooden crates to different locations within the building
2. Engineering was completed and special custom made installation brackets were designed and used due to the potential of earthquakes in Boise, Idaho.

What were the results of the project?

The client was ecstatic with the results of the retractable patio and deck pergola cover systems. This is truly a stunning example of an outstanding product, function, and aesthetics as can be seen in the pictures. All client requirements were met, including a contemporary, stylish and very clean appearance along with providing shade, sun, UV, glare, heat and most importantly rain protection.
