Please describe the project specifications

This project presented itself as a Winery "tasting room" patio approximately 40' x 40' in dimension.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of this project was to dispense with umbrellas and shade the patio. The Client asked us to design, engineer, fabricate, and install shade sails. They requested full patio shade coverage from 10 am thru 5 pm.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The view was the primary consideration. The Client did not want any obstruction of the view, yet still enjoy shade from the South and Southwest Sun angles. We went thru 9 design revisions. In our quest for a final design approval we constructed temporary roof attachments and secured them in their designed locations. We anchored two 8" sonotubes representing the pole attachments in their designed locations. We then stretched colored string from attachment to attachment to delineate sail edge locations. This allowed the Client to preview the "String" shade sails along with the visual impact of 8" pole attachments. We had previously provided the Client with a Google Earth, geo-located shade shift analysis. It wasn't until they stood under the "String" shade sails and looked out over the valley that they could finally envision it. The design was approved that afternoon.

What were the results of the project?

The Client is very happy. Although it took a few evolution's, we finally achieved the shade coverage the Client was seeking. It has yielded 2 other local winery projects and numerous referrals.
