Please describe the project specifications

Foster Park playground is part of a new sport and recreation hub for the township of Rolleston build for the community by Selwyn District Council. We were asked to design and build shading systems to enhance the visitor experience while enjoying the outdoor spaces within the playground.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Shading the large stainless steel slide during the hottest part of the day, protecting children from surface heat caused by the sun was the main design consideration for this project.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Placing visually stunning sail membranes at a height to avoid being vandalized and project shade onto the stainless steel slide between 11 pm and 3 pm during summer required 3D modelling. The exposed site exposed the sail membranes to regular high wind loadings regularly exceeding 130 kilometres per hour and possible winter snow loadings making this project unique.

What were the results of the project?

Visually stunning sails that work amazingly well to reduce heat build-up on the slide surface was the client feedback to us in the months following installation.
