Please describe the project specifications

This project features (1) finely finished motorized custom retractable canopy for the Beacon Pool Bar and Lookout at the Don Cesar Hotel. The canopy is 22’-4-1/2”wide x 33’-10-1/2”projection and has a 2’-6” height and a clearance of 7’-6”. The fabric for the canopies is Eclissi, white. This is a vinyl waterproof fabric.

The resort was doing a three year renovation, with the pool bar area being the latter part of the renovation. The client wanted to add a rooftop retreat, above the pool bar, that would provide shade and weather protection from the hot sun and tropical rains while keeping the spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico and the famous evening sunsets. The client wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere that would draw guests to the space, allowing them to escape and enjoy the resort’s amenities. It was very important for them to feature and accentuate the beautiful views of the sandy beach and water views along with spectacular sunset views. They wanted a clean design that harmonizes with the architecture of the resort. Being right on the beachfront, it was important for them to have something that would be easy to care for throughout the year and in the event of an approaching tropical storm or hurricane.

What is unique or complex about the project?

A couple of things set this project apart from others. The outcome of the project is a very beautiful motorized retractable canopy that enhances the renovation of a historic hotel. Accomplishing this in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Logistics and installation of the project needed to be very carefully considered. The health and safety of our staff was very important – planning measuring, manufacturing, transportation, lodging, meals. Procuring the permitting when building departments are figuring out the best way to work and everything takes longer during the pandemic. All of the components of the project were custom made to fit the new rooftop deck above the Beacon Pool Bar at the Don Cesar Hotel. These would also need to be shipped to the project location. For this reason, all of the frame work was modularly designed for transport on truck bed and for ease of assembly. Being on the beachfront, the project was designed with large Corradi B-space aluminum members for all of the frame work and posts to resist rusting. The finish was powder coated Urban Bronze to complement the framework with the deck space. Columns and beams were designed to fit and splice together with bolts. The use of Eclissi fabric was chosen as it keeps the area below cooler during the hottest time of the day. The 2’-6” marquee style perimeter has side panels that diffuses light in the evening to create a romantic glow around the area. When it rains, water flows to the side gutters that drain the water in an inconspicuous way through the posts.
