Please describe the project specifications

This project is a 16-foot by 10-foot sun shade top that covers nearly all of the deck space, fore and aft of the hardtop cabin on a custom 32’ Munson landing craft. The fabric used is Natural Sunbrella and white Top Gun reinforcement. The top is attached to the frame using stainless #2 grommets and Spectra Line.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client requested a top that would complement the lines of the vessel and hold up to constant UV since the vessel is used in the Middle East. Due to the large size and forward-facing orientation of the frame and top, the client wanted to be sure the top was very strong, and able to hold up to 50 mph winds while in use. The top also had to allow space for 4 pick points on the vessel when it is lifted out of the water.

What is unique or complex about the project?

A big challenge in designing the framework was that it couldn’t be symmetrical from side to side as the loading doors were in different locations on either side. The vertical supports needed to provide enough clearance to allow for people to get on and off the vessel. Installation had to take place after the vessel was freshly painted, so there was no room for mistakes that would compromise the paint job. All of the major stress points had to be drilled and through bolted with 316 stainless bolts as the set screws will not hold up to the forces on a top like this. We also had to construct the frame and top so that it could be broken down for shipment to the Middle East from Washington State. I didn’t see an option to mention Solar Fix thread, but we used it.

What were the results of the project?

Results were successful. It complements the boat.... Tough, built to last, look good, and will stand up to the elements!
